At the origin of the P'tit Train du Nord

Thehistory of the P'tit Train du Nord is as old as that of the Laurentian region. It was originally a railroad built between 1891 and 1909 that linked Saint-Jérôme and Mont-Laurier for the transportation of passengers and luggage. The first section, linking Montreal and Saint-Jérôme, was inaugurated on October 8, 1876. In 1882, the Canadian Pacific Railway bought the right-of-way and extended the track, which reached the town of Mont-Laurier in 1909. For a long time, it played a key role in the economic development of the region and the Quebec government, but its transportation activities ceased in 1981.

In 1994, the Quebec government purchased the railway right-of-way from the Canadian Pacific Railway and entrusted its management to a board of directors. Thus, the P'tit Train du Nord had a new life. The rail corridor was gradually converted into a multi-use recreational trail starting in 1996 with the completion of the first phase in Bois-des-Filion. The rails have been torn up, the old stations have been turned into museums and cafes, and the former rail bed has been converted into a linear recreational and tourist trail.

The 5 rules of thumb to know during your visit

The P'tit Train du Nord is governed by a regulation of the MRC des Laurentides :

• Walking with animals is not allowed. A team of police officers conducts education and, if necessary, punishes recalcitrant users
• Pedestrians must walk on the left side of the road, against the direction of the cyclists and skaters who walk on the right.
• Passing in the left lane is permitted when it is safe to do so.
• The maximum speed of traffic on the track is limited to 22 km/h.
• To minimize the risk of contagion of covid, you must respect the health instructions issued by the Quebec government. if you have any symptoms of covid, stay home and see a doctor. There are nearly 60 volunteer patrollers trained in health care (you can fill out a contact form available digitally if you are interested in becoming a patroller).

Lake Raymond Beach | Val-Morin

Located next to the P'tit Train du Nord in Val Morin, this small beach on Lake Raymond offers a swimming area for the whole family. It is close to a playground and the bike path, making it easy to enjoy the many other summer activities in the area. This beautiful little beach in the Laurentian region of Quebec is a great free swimming spot near downtown Val-Morin, located about an hour's drive from the city of Montreal. There is a paid parking for non-residents but you can also reach the beach by bike. There are picnic tables, toilets and a playground for children. It is not a big beach and there are not enough activities, but the view is very nice and it is a great place to relax in the sun.
